Glenfarclas

Based in the famous whisky producing area of Speyside in the Scottish Highlands, the Glenfarclas Distillery was founded by Robert Hay in 1836, although it was it’s sale to John Grant in 1865 after Hay’s death which started the famous Grant family dynasty at the distillery. Its location in Ballindalloch is ideally placed to source its water from the Ben Rinnes mountain, is close to the River Spey and also the fertile moors of Banffshire.

The Grant family have become synonymous with whisky production, and the Glenfarclas Distillery has been in their family for over 150 years. Initially leased to John Grant’s distant cousin John Smith of Glenlivet, his son George took over in 1870, and upon George’s untimely death in 1889 his two eldest sons took over. After an unsuccessful partnership in the 1890’s with Pattison, Elder & Co. the distillery was facing financial ruin, however after 15 years of hard work the Grant family turned things around and vowed never to rely on outside investors again. By the 1950’s, now in the fourth generation of Grant ownership, the demand for Glenfarclas had boomed, with the repeal of the 1860’s Spirit Act doubling its capacity.
