Glenfiddich

Founded in 1886 in Dufftown, in the Scottish Highlands, the world famous Glenfiddich Distillery is one of three founded in the local area by William Grant, the other two being Mortlach and Balvenie, sharing it’s Robbie Dhu Spring water source with the latter. William chose the Glenfiddich name due to it’s Gaelic meaning of ‘Valley of the Deer’, with the first spirit being produced from the copper stills on Christmas Day 1887.

His grandson, Grant, joined the distillery just prior to the Prohibition, and rather than scaling back production like many of the other distilleries he increased it. When the laws changed, Glenfiddich was one of only 6 distilleries left in Scotland, and had aged whiskies, which are matured in their on site warehouses, ready to fulfil the sudden boom in demand. Following World War II, Glenfiddich decided to concentrate on producing single malts, whilst it’s competitors produced blends, marketing themselves as such in 1963. By 1974 that decision had proved to be correct with the installation of 16 new stills, all of which are handmade by their own team of permanent craftsmen, to cope with the huge demand as Glenfiddich became the largest selling single malt in the world.
